Let us take you through the history that inspired this design, weaving the tale of a Syrian mermaid adorned in the Odissi attire of India.
The earliest Syrian mermaid legend revolves around Atargatis, a deity embodying fertility and water. Worshipped in the Temple of Atargatis in Hierapolis (modern-day Manbij), her rituals reflected her dual nature. Syrian mermaids influenced Greek and Roman myths. Today, Syrian artists revive these tales in modern cultural expressions.
Originating from Odisha in the 2nd century BC, Odissi, a classical dance form of India, was performed by Maharis in devotion to deities, especially Lord Jagannath. Male performers sustained it during the 16th century. Rediscovered in the mid-20th century, Odissi is known for intricate footwork, expressive gestures, and fluid movements conveying divine love and human emotion.
